Hydro for Hunger is an initiative that raises awareness about
world hunger and directs in-kind contributions and financial
donations to the U.S.-based Institute of Simplified Hydroponics.
The Institute of Simplified Hydroponics is a 501-C(3)
not-for-profit that helps communities in developing countries
become self-sufficient by teaching small-scale hydroponic food
cultivation techniques.
How long has Hydro for Hunger been active?
Hydro for Hunger was initiated by hydroponic industry leaders in 2002.
Who is involved with Hydro for Hunger?
Hydro for Hunger is supported by independent hydroponic manufacturers, merchants,
and hobbyists alike.
Why hydroponics?
When compared to conventional soil gardening methods, hydroponics can
produce up to six times the food with five percent of the water in
less than one third of the space. Hydroponic systems continuously
recycle valuable water and nutrients. Because hydroponic plants can
readily access the nutrient-rich solution, they exhibit accelerated
growth rates. As a result, hydroponic microgardens are a viable
long-term food production solution in areas where water and arable
land are scarce and demand often outstrips supply.
What has Hydro for Hunger accomplished?
To date, Hydro for Hunger has raised almost $60,000 to benefit the
sustainable development projects of the Institute of Simplified
Hydroponics. This funding has enabled the training and education
necessary to successfully implement productive hydroponic microgardens
in areas like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Mexico.
